Lincolnshire Cat Club & Humberside Cat Club
Combined Show

10th July 2010

My thanks to Beryl & Judy, the two Show Managers, and the committees for the invitation to judge. The combined show was a brave venture and certainly seems to have worked - so well done for what must have been a mammoth organisational task. The hall was unbearably hot, the addition of the fans certainly helped the situation. I had some good cats and had to make two decisions which I was unhappy with, both of which were probably regarded by exhibitors as being very harsh. My thanks as always to Mark for accompanying me and stewarding.

Humberside Cat Club
Best Of Variety Oriental
I was scheduled to judge Lincolnshire BOV Oriental but due to a slight confusion Mrs Hamilton judged it and I judged Humberside BOV Oriental which she was scheduled to judge! I had great pleasure in awarding BOV to Mrs Bailey's stunning young Black male WESTGARTH BATOUTOFHELL. This lad certainly has all the qualities you can ask for in an Oriental.

Oriental Grand Champion Male
Imp Gr Ch : Cassar-Simmonds' GR CH FIORDILISO INFIDELITY 29 M 15-01-09
A beautiful cat of superb overall type and balance. Strong masculine head of excellent type and balance. Ears large and well shaped ears, perfectly set with excellent width between. Excellent profile, correct bite, good chin-line. Expressive eyes of good green colour, excellent shape and set. Good muzzle with straight lines to wedge. Body of excellent length and Oriental type, just a little lightweight. Coat of excellent texture, very short and close lying. This lad's coat is an excellent rich chestnut brown colour, sadly not sound to the roots. I felt that his other outstanding qualities outweighed his failings and was pleased to award the IGC, an award which I feel he justly deserved.

Oriental Black Adult, Male
1 CC & BoB Bailey's WESTGARTH BATOUTOFHELL 37 M 22-09-09
A well grown young male, 9½ months old, and quite outstanding! A youngster of overall excellence and elegance. Head of excellent type and well balanced. Large ears of excellent shape and set. Excellent top of head. Excellent profile, very good chinline and correct bite. Muzzle appeared to show a pinch, but this was the result of him puffing his whisker pads. Excellent lines to wedge. Eyes of excellent size, shape and set, very good clear green colour. Long elegant neck. Excellent length to body. Long slender legs with neat feet. Tail of very good length needing just a little more taper for perfection/ Very short close lying coat of excellent texture, dense glossy black and sound to the roots. Excellent condition and a superb temperament, he really did show himself to advantage. A young cat of overall excellence, and without doubt one of the finest Orientals I have judged.

2 Cassar-Simmond's CH CIATRA BASHFUL BRUNO 37 M 12-01-08
A mature male of overall excellence. Strong masculine head of excellent type and perfectly balanced. Ears large and well set with excellent top of head. Excellent profile, bite looks correct despite missing incisors. good strong chin. Eyes good shape and set, fair green in colour. Body of excellent Oriental type. Tail short for balance. Coat of fair length, rather open, colour sound to the roots but showing a rusty tinge. An excellent example of the breed and extremely unlucky to meet the winner.

Oriental Spotted Tabby Neuter Male
1 PC & BoB Nelson's GR PR TIDDLYPOO JUSTIN TYME 38d MN 25-02-06
A very handsome lad of overall excellence who I have admired in the past. Strong masculine head of overall excellence. Large well set ears of good shape with excellent width between. Excellent top of head. Excellent profile, good strong chin, correct bite. Muzzle showing the slightest pinch, but otherwise excellent lines to wedge. Eyes of excellent size, shape and set, a very good clear green colour. Body of excellent length and type, firm and well muscled. Tail could be better tapered. Short close lying coat of very good texture. Excellent rich fiery red colouring. Dorsal area clearly patterened with distinctly broken spine lines with good contrast. Pattern on body fairly well defined. An excellent quality lad with a superb temperament, shown in excellent condition. A real pleasure to judge.

Oriental Longhair Neuter, Female
Considered for BoB : Goddard's GR PR MYLYNN SWEET PEA 62 43s FN 05-09-08
Solely because of the short coat I did not award BoB.
See below.

Lincolnshire Cat Club

Oriental Premier Female
1 GPC n/a Goddard's GR PR MYLYNN SWEET PEA 62 43s FN 05-09-08
A very attractive Oriental of overall excellent type and balance, and whilst she excels as an 'Oriental' she falls well short as a Longhair, lacking the length and volume of coat required EVEN allowing for seasonal variation. Head of excellent shape and balance. Ears of excellent size shape and set with good width between. Excellent top of head. Excellent profile, good chin-line. Excellent lines to wedge. Body of very good length and overall type. Good length limbs. Tail rather short and lacking sufficient taper. Excellent condition and temperament. Coat of excellent texture, excellent colour shading, and outstanding silver ground free from tarnishing. Unfortunately the coat is too short with the only length being on the tail, and even this is only fair length. The body coat is too short and the legs and paws are very short of coat. Had she had more coat I would willingly have given her the GPC because her type is excellent BUT she is an Oriental Longhair. With regret I felt I could not make the award to a very attractive lass with so many other qualities.

Oriental Caramel Adult, Male
1 IC & BoB Chivers' DEDANNAN TREASURE ME 37n M 28/05/09
A large lad, just a little chubby but he looks a lot trimmer than the last time I judged him! Head of overall good type. Ears large and well set. Skull a little flat and slight bump on nose detract from an otherwise good profile, good chin-line. Eyes of very good size shape and set, good green colour. Body of good length, just a little chubby. Tail rather short and lacking sufficient taper. Coat of good length and texture, colour a little uneven and showing weathering. Well deserving of the IC. A friendly lad.

Oriental Bicolour Adult, Male
Wrong Pattern : Yates' HIDCOTE MONTE CARLO 48 44a M 06-07-09
A well grown young male of overall excellent Oriental type. Ears of excellent shape, large and well set. Excellent top of head. Excellent profile. Excellent eye shape, size and set, super bright green in colour. Muzzle very pinched and chin shallow. Long elegant body of excellent type. Long slender legs, neat feet. Tail good length but lacking sufficient taper. Coat of good length and texture, sleek and close lying. Excellent bright white with very good crisp delineation between white and blue patches. Excellent condition and temperament.

From a blue patch on the one side this lad shows two broad stripes which are far too wide for a Mackerel Tabby and are typical of the bars commonly seen in a Spotted, additionally the tail rings are of the width typically seen in a Spotted Tabby, rather than the narrower rings which are seen in a Mackerel Tabby. For many years I have questioned whether the Oriental gene pool has the capability of producing Mackerel pattern, and though the majority of Spotted Tabbies show an elongated broken bars pattern, linkage does not make a Mackerel.

Unfortunately the Breed Standard gives precise pattern descriptions, and the segregation of numbers according to pattern creates a dilemma for judge. The cat is in my view definitely NOT a Mackerel Tabby and therefore I had no alternative but to mark 'Wrong Pattern'. I did so with some misgiving because regardless of the pattern he would still have been in the same class, and the pattern and colour combined only account for 15 points, making it a rather minor factor whereas in the Oriental Tabbies there are 15 points for colour and 20 points for pattern. I would hope that the relevant BAC will give consideration to this issue, maybe incorrect pattern registrations could be overlooked?

I had a lengthy conversation with the owner, Mrs Yates, and fully understand her frustrations, I would like to thank and compliment Mrs Yates for her understanding attitude - a rarity today. My apologies once again. It is no consolation but I would otherwise have happily awarded this lad the CC and BoB

Oriental Red Neuter Male
1 PC & BoB Halliday's GR PR TOGHAR TERRACOTA 37d MN 16-07-07
A lovely lad of overall elegance. Head of overall balance and excellent shape. Large ears of good shape and set. Muzzle slightly pinched. Good profile overall though skull is a little too flat. Good chin-line, too many teeth missing to assess bite. Eyes of excellent size shape and set, a good light green colour. Long elegant body of excellent Oriental type. Long slender legs, tail short for balance. Coat of good length and excellent texture. Excellent rich red colour, good solid dorsal area, body showing only slight markings. An excellent lad, well natured and shown in very good condition.
