CUMBERLAND CAT CLUB

13th October 2001

John S Harrison

My thanks to Show Manager; Jennifer Fleming; and the Committee for once again inviting me to judge at this popular autumn show. The overall entry was very good, I had a very full book and was delighted with the quality. My thanks as always to Mark Parkinson for stewarding for me.

Before going on to my Open Class critiques I would like to make a general comment on the PRO-PLAN / OUR CATS STAKES - AV Oriental Neuter which it was my privilege to judge. This class was indeed of quite exceptional quality with all four entrants not only being of outstanding quality but also with well-proven track records! Rarely have I had the privilege of judging a class of such quality cats. The 'lower' placings in no way reflected on the quality of the individual exhibits but indicate my rating of four outstanding exhibits:

1 Fellow's UK GR CH CHELANCA PENTLANDITE, 43ps FN
2 Brown's CH & GR PR CLOUDBOURN SHASTRI, 45b MN
3 Wooller's GR CH & SUP GR PR CHELANCA LORD GYLLENE, 43bs MN
4 Clark's GR PR LANDICAN FIREFOX, 37d MN

AOV FOREIGN CHAMPION, Male

Gd Ch Davidson's CH KARAKORAM MAGICS LEGACY. 72/45bq. What a stunning chap! Large, powerful, masculine and yet still having 'foreign elegance'. Excellent head type overall. Ears of excellent shape and setting with excellent domed top of head. Very good profile. Good nose length. Excellent muzzle shape. Eyes excellent shape and set, with superb expression. Excellent body type. Excellent short close coat of perfect texture. Excellent rich colour showing the effects of Burmese restriction. Excellent clear distinct ticking, though to be honest I'd prefer it to extend a little further down the hair. Makes a change to see clear light roots in an Asian! Excellent muscular condition. Unfortunately he was penned next to a calling queen and nearly blew his chances - he'd far more important things on his mind that impressing a judge and didn't really want to be handled! Certainly a most impressive exhibit - congratulations to owner/breeder

Asian Tabby, Adult

1, CC n/a Payne's NEMOREZ LULABYOFBIRDLAND. 72/45a. Unfortunately this exhibit did herself no favours and it was pretty nigh impossible to handle her. Head of good type overall. Ears of good shape and set. Good profile. Eyes very full. Good body type. Coat of good surface colour but I never got as far as the ticking!

BoB: Davidson's CH KARAKORAM MAGICS LEGACY. 72/45bq

Asian Tabby, Kitten

Not as Registered: Burnett's KARAKORAM GYPSYROSE. This attractive female kitten is incorrectly registered as a Lilac Ticked Tabby (72/45c), she is infact neither Lilac nor a Ticked Tabby but is a Caramel Burmilla (72/43n). Her colour is quite definitely Caramel which is particularly distinct on her hind feet. Whilst she is of ticked pattern it is apparent that she is Shaded rather than tabby, and I would expect this aspect of her coat, at 8 months, to improve over the next few months. Had she been correctly registered she would without doubt have had BoB - she was a very pleasing exhibit

Ragdoll, Colourpointed / Mitted Adult Male

1,CC & BoB Martin's CATREBA GOODY TWOSHOES. 66a 21/08/2000 Ears of very good size and shape but he has a tendency to hold them a little too low. Very good profile. Good nose. Excellent eye shape and set, fair colour. Well developed cheeks, good muzzle. Excellent body type and balance. Excellent tail. Excellent coat length and texture, good colour to points. I found this exhibit very pleasing, but was concerned by his lack of size, which I concluded, was the result of immaturity. I hesitated over awarding the CC but taking his age of 13 months into account decided to make the award.

2 Sprot's WIMSEYCATS GOLDEN WILLOW. 66 14/09/2000 Ears of fair shape and set. Skull rather rounded. Profile a little straight. Excellent chin line. Fair muzzle, with good cheeks. Excellent eye shape and colour. Body small and too fine in build even allowing for age. Coat of very good length and texture.

Ragdoll, Colourpointed / Mitted Adult Female

1& CC Haworth's CH POLLYWOFFLES BLUE MIST. 66a 30/04/2000 A very promising youngster of overall excellent type lacking only in size. Head of overall excellence. Ears very good shape and set with correct forward tilt. Excellent profile with nose of correct length. Excellent muzzle and cheeks. Excellent eye shape and set, bright blue colour. Excellent body type and length but lacking in size. Very good coat length and texture, excellent body and points colour. Excellent condition and temperament. Again I hesitated over awarding the CC in view of the small size of this delightful queen - at 17 months of age I would expect to see a larger female. This was my only reservation, I hope she makes some size.

2 Gilyeat's RAGAMOUR AZARIA. 66aw 05/09/2000 Head of very good type. Ears of good shape and set. Good colour eyes of correct shape and set. Fair muzzle, cheeks need better definition. Body of good type but very small for age. Coat of good length and texture. Body showing rather heavy shading for age and points colour rather dull.

Ragdoll, Colourpointed / Mitted Kitten,Male

1& BoB Sprot's RAGALYN GABRIEL. 66a 30/04/2001 What a very nice little chap - he certainly seemed to be enjoying his day out! The first thing one notices about this lad is that he has very good size for just 5 months of age. Ears of very good shape and size, correctly set. Very good skull shape. Profile developing well though nose just a little long at present. Cheeks showing good definition for age, muzzle a trifle square. Eyes a little pale but of excellent shape and set. Excellent short neck and long strong body of correct type. Heavy body of excellent size and strength of bone for age. Coat of very good length and texture. Excellent body and points colour. Excellent condition and presentation. This kitten has the type I normally associate with a Bi-Colour and I was delighted to find it in a Colourpointed, I consider him to be a very promising kitten and I shall watch him with interest.

Ragdoll, Colourpointed / Mitted Kitten,Female

1 Bulmer's ADDICTIKAT FAABERGE. 66a 08/03/2001 A very grumpy youngster who certainly needs to learn some manners! Ears of fair shape and set. Fair profile, though nose rather long. Fair cheeks. Pale eyes very full with startled expression. Body of fair type but rather small and lightweight for 7 months of age. Coat of good length and texture, body rather shaded for age. Points colour very uneven.

Ragdoll, Bi-Colour Neuter

1 PC & BoB Haworth's PR POLLYWOFFLES TYSON. 66/31a 16/04/1999 This superb exhibit is really in a class of his own - he is 'large, powerful and imposing'. Excellent head type. Ears correct shape, size and set. Good broad top of head. Excellent profile. Excellent muzzle. Excellent cheeks. Eyes of correct shape and set. Excellent body type showing exceptional bone and muscle development. Coat of correct length and texture, body of excellent colour. Excellent body and points colour, with good markings. Excellent condition. This exhibit certainly has the qualities I look for in the breed. Always a privilege to handle this very impressive gent - and a pleasure to give him a PC!

Ragdoll, Colourpointed / Mitted Neuter

1 PC n/a Lynch's CHESAWOOD WILLOW UFGOOD. 66 09/03/2000 Head of good type. Ears good shape and set. Very good top of skull. Very good profile, though nose a little too long. Very good cheeks. Excellent body type, excellent size and build. Excellent coat length and texture. Points colour not matching. Unfortunately at just 20 months of age this chap's body colour is so heavily shaded that in places it matches the points colour. The darkness of body, lack of contrast and uneven points colour was the reason for the non award of the PC.

Oriental Black Adult

1, CC n/a Gibson's KAERAF TALKOFTHEDEVIL. 37 17/06/2000 Large ears of good shape and set. Skull too flat. Profile angular and showing dip to nose, chin line not level and bite uneven. Muzzle rather square. Eyes of very good shape and set but of poor colour. Excellent body type, well muscled. Elegant legs. Excellent close lying coat, short and totally sound to the roots. Some scattered brindled hairs on flanks. Excellent condition. A nice exhibit, but head faults preclude award of CC.

Oriental Shaded Adult

1, CC & BoB Stafford's CH HEYBURY TITIANRED. 43ds 08/06/1999 Head of very good shape. Ears good size, shape and set. Good top of head. Very good profile overall though shows slight dip. Good lines to wedge despite slight muzzle pinch. Chin too shallow. Eyes of very good shape and set, colour appeared far too orange. Excellent body type. Excellent short close lying coat of correct texture. Excellent light shading evenly distributed. Very good red colour on silver/ivory ground. I hesitated over awarding the CC because of the eye colour but after taking her to natural light decided they showed some green colour and were just, and only just, adequate.

Oriental Shaded Kitten, Male

I thought long and hard over the two exhibits in this class and considered marking both 'Not As Registered' as both had ticking more in keeping with a Ticked Tabby than a Shaded. From my own experience with this variety I decided that it was more appropriate to withhold the 1st as the coats of both kittens will in, all likelihood, clear within the next few months - but on the day neither had good shaded coats. The coats of both showed very strong indication of being Shaded, but still exhibited pronounced ticking. If they had been in a Ticked Tabby class I would have been very critical of their coats, but would probably not have withheld the 1st.

2 Wooller's CHELANCA HARVEST MOON. 43bs 11/05/2001 Certainly a most attractive stylish kitten of overall excellence showing very great promise indeed. Excellent head shape overall. Ears of excellent size, shape and set with superb top of head. Excellent profile. Excellent lines to wedge. Eyes of very good shape and set, light green colour. Excellent body type, elegant legs. Long whip tail, slightly blunt at tip. Excellent short close lying coat of very good texture. Excellent clear silver ground with minimal tarnishing or discoloration. Coat showing too much ticking at present though it lacks definition and is clearly moving to the hair ends. When the coat clears, as it undoubtedly will, this very attractive exhibit will, I would suspect, be unstoppable. Excellent condition and temperament.

3 Fellows' CHELANCA SIERRA SANDSTORM. 43f 09/04/2001 Very good head type. Ears very good size, shape and set. Excellent lines to wedge. Excellent profile. Correct bite, chin rather shallow. Excellent eye shape and set, colour needs to be a clearer green. Excellent Oriental body type, slender legs, balanced tail. Very good coat length and texture. Excellent even soft cream colour. At present the colour is very even with minimal shading showing in the hall lighting. Tail shows rings to the full length. Excellent condition and temperament.

Oriental Shaded Kitten, Female

1& BoB Fellows' CHELANCA CHIQUITA. 43hs 09/04/2001 A very attractive youngster. Beautifully balanced head of excellent Oriental shape. Excellent shaped ears of good size and correct set. Excellent top of head. Excellent even profile totally devoid of dips or bumps. Excellent strong chin with good even bite. Eyes of correct set but full, colour an acceptable green. Excellent body type. Dainty legs, good tail. Excellent short coat of correct texture. A beautiful rich mix of red, cream and dark chocolate shading on a clear silver ground, top of head a little solid. Excellent even shading with minimal ticking present. This delightful kitten certainly has a most promising coat. Excellent temperament and condition.

2 Parkinson's SMAUG ETOMIE. 43bs 30/05/2001 Overall I felt this kitten was very small for 19 weeks of age, and still very much a baby. Head rather short for balance at present. Ears of good shape and set. Skull overall rather flat and uneven. Good lines to wedge. Chin very shallow. Eyes of good shape but too horizontal in set. Very good body type. Good coat length and texture. Excellent chocolate shading on an exceptionally clear silver ground totally devoid of any indication of tarnishing or discoloration.

Oriental Black Neuter

1,PC n/a Ronald's SEAMLESS NOSFERATU. 37 07/12/2000 Ears of good shape and set but rather small for balance. Profile rather uneven. Fair lines to wedge. Eyes good shape and set, but two toned in colour with distinct yellow outer ring. Body of very good type. Tail short for balance. Excellent coat length and texture, unfortunately black colour very unsound showing light roots.

Oriental Ticked Tabby Neuter

1, PC & BoB Brown's CH & GR PR CLOUDBORN SHASTRI. 45b. 20/08/1997 This exhibit is certainly one of the finest Ticked Tabbies it has been my privilege to handle at a show for many years. He has the three fundamental requirements of an Oriental Tabby - excellence of type, colour, and ticking/pattern. In my opinion this chap, at four years of age, is the finest Oriental Tabby on the show bench at the present time. Excellent head shape overall. Ears excellent shape size and set. Very good profile. Excellent eye shape, good colour. Masculine body of excellent length and correct Oriental type. Fine elegant legs, balanced tail. Excellent coat length and texture. Excellent distinct ticking extending well down the hair shaft. Excellent chocolate colour banding on rich ground colour giving an overall warmth and richness so seldom found in Oriental Tabbies these days. A pleasure indeed to handle this superb exhibit once again - I think I've judged him twice before and each time I was impressed - and I still am!

Oriental Shaded Neuter, Male

1 & PC Woollers' GR CH & SUP GR PR CHELANCA LORD GYLLENE. 43bs. 26/07/1997. Another stylish four year old exhibit of overall very pleasing type. Excellent ear shape and set, perfect top of head. Excellent lines to wedge. Good profile. Correct bite but chin recedes noticeably. Excellent eye shape and set, fair green colour. Excellent body type, good length and slender. Coat short and close lying and of excellent texture. Even chocolate shading of good quality. Silver ground just a little 'muddy' and showing some slight tarnishing. Excellent condition and presentation. Certainly an excellent Oriental and a very fine example of the Shaded. Though he was well deserving of the PC when it came to BoB he was no match for his dear old granny!

Oriental Shaded Neuter, Female

1, PC & BoB Fellows' UK GR CH CHELANCA PENTLANDITE. 43ps. 16/01/1995 This outstanding Oriental has all the qualities I look for in the Breed and fits the SoP so closely, and yet at the same time shows no exaggeration of type. Perfectly balanced head. Ears of excellent size, shape and set. Excellent top of head with absolutely no tendency to flatness. Excellent even profile. Excellent lines to wedge. Grape green eyes of very good shape and set though to nit-pick could be just a little smaller for perfection. Excellently balanced body and legs, tail a little short for perfection. Excellent short close lying coat of perfect texture. Excellent colour distribution, even shading lightly distributed on a very good silver ground. Shown in excellent condition. At 61/2 years of age this old girl is most certainly not past her "Best Before Date" and proved it by going on to BIS Oriental.
