Gwynedd Cat Club

19th July 2003

John S Harrison

I had not intended to judge at Gwynedd as I anticipated being on holiday, I then thought I was going to steward, but due to a shortage of Judges ended up judging! Pleased I was able to help the Club out. Under Dorothy Tomlinson's calm control the show seemed to run like clockwork - well done Dorothy and Committee.

The Gwynedd Cat Club is of course my local club, and when I was in my late teens and early 20's I served on the Committee for some years ….. how well do I remember cutting the stencils and churning out the quarterly Newsletters, not to mention the schedules and catalogues for the first Gwynedd Cat Club shows on an old hand turned duplicator!!!!! The shows were held in a marquee at an Agricultural Show, what fun they were with our stalwart band of regular judges Anne Rickson, Gladys Genty, Monica Thake, Shirley Beever, and Margaret & Bill Groom along with Jean Hogan who we still see at some shows. It was good to see two of the early members of the Committee, Pam Carr and Kathy Shacklady still exhibiting at this years show …. time goes by, we drift apart, but can still laugh at all the good times we had.

I took over much of Mr Worths judging book - hope you're now better Bob. I hope most exhibitors were not too disappointed at the change of judge, though one exhibitor certainly was upset ….. and informed me that it was well known I don't like white cats … the fact that I used to breed Foreign Whites and owned not only the first FW Champion, but also the first FW Male Grand Champion obviously has no bearing on the matter ….. unless my memory fails me they were …. well … sort of …. like …. WHITE!

My grateful thanks to Steve Parkin - who was not judging on the day - for stewarding for me, we had a good day together.

Norwegian Forest Cat, Adult Male
1 CC & BoB Welch's CH KYRREKATT KINGHAAKON 67 16. 09/04/02
A cat of overall excellence, so typical of what we expect in best examples of this breed. Excellent head type. Ears of very excellent size and shape though perhaps just a bit wide set for perfection. Very good profile. Excellent firm chin, good level bite. Excellent eye shape and set. Excellent body type, of correct length and balance. Very well boned, firm muscle and in excellent condition. Excellent length strongly boned legs. Tail well balanced with good plume. Clear blue coat of excellent length and texture. Excellent relaxed temperament, a real pleasure to handle. Congratulations to his breeders for yet another superb specimen, and to his owners for showing him in such excellent condition. I was impressed with this lad at Kernow (where I was also a late substitute!) and it is quite clear that he has fulfilled that early promise.

2 Sedgewick's CATWO APOLLO 67 31t 09-10-02
At only just adult this elegant chap shows considerable promise. He is of very good size and overall type. Ears of very good size and setting, but he tends to hold them down a little. Very good profile, good strong chin and correct bite. Excellent eye shape. Excellent body type, excellent length, well boned and firmly muscled. Excellent length and bone to legs. Excellent tail. Excellent coat length and texture. I did call the Duty Vet to this exhibit as he has a scar along the umbilical cord area, I subsequently learned from the owner that this was the result of an operation to remove a piece of string! A lovely natured chap.

3 Buckley's MAR MICHELS SHEROKEE 67 31ts. 26-03-02
Head overall rather too wide for correct balance. Ears of good size rather wide in set and carried low. Profile far too angular with distinct change of plane. Eyes good size though rather full. Body of fair type but very small and fine boned even taking age into account. Coat of good length and very good texture, very moulty. A civilised young gent who enjoyed the attention.

Norwegian Forest Cat, Neuter Male
1 PC & BoB Coward's PR NORDLYS WILLIAM 67 31t. 26-11-01
A large strongly built exhibit of overall excellent type. Excellent head type. Ears of excellent size and shape, perfectly set. and setting. Very good profile overall though not quite straight. Excellent chin line, good even bite. Eyes of excellent size and shape. Excellent body type of superb size and length. Strong bone and well muscled. Legs in perfect proportion. Excellent tail. Excellent coat length and texture. A most attractive exhibit, of excellent type and very affable to boot!

2 Kemp's PR SNOWSCAPE STORM 67 31t. 18-05-98
This exhibit did himself no favours, he really was a grumpy chap. His ears were of good size and shape but appeared to be very wide set, though whether this was the case or just the way he was holding was anyone's guess. He really didn't want to come out and play! Head rather broad. Fairly good profile, I decided not to bother checking his bite! Excellent body type. Good size. Very good coat length and texture. Such a pity this chap wasn't enjoying his day out.

Norwegian Forest Cat Neuter Female
1 PC n/a Hancock's UK Gr Ch KYRREKATT CLAIRE 67 14. 10-06-97
This very well known female at 6 years of age is still very small, fine boned and light weight lacking the size required in a mature specimen of the variety. Ears a little small but of very good setting. Head good shape overall. Lovely blue eyes of correct shape and set. Unfortunately her profile was very uneven with a flat top of head and distinct change of plane at the brow giving an angular profile, and with a pronounced nose break and certainly not in accordance with the requirements specified by the Breed Standard. Coat of fair length and texture lacking sparkle. I discussed this exhibit with two other full Judges of the Breed and they concurred with my opinion.
