WESSEX CAT CLUB

11th November 2001

John S Harrison

My thanks to Show Managers Gill Cornish and Marjory Draper for inviting me to judge. I have not judged for this Club before and thoroughly enjoyed my day at their Show. I found the quality of the Oriental exhibits to be of a very high standard.

Before going on to the critiques I really feel that I must make mention of four 91/2 month old Oriental exhibits owned and bred by Mrs Lillington. These four exhibits SALASIM CRAZY SHADES 43es, SALASIM CASTRO 29, SALASIM HOT FLASH 38d, and SALASIM DUNE 43ds were all from the same litter and all won their CC or PC. Four really beautiful cats of excellent Oriental type, and I congratulate Mrs Lillington on this achievement. As a breeder of Shaded in red & silver I was to say the least just a little envious!

I did not feel justified in awarding a 1st prize to any of the exhibits entered in the three Asian Open classes I judged. My reason for withholding the 1st was not because of individual 'withholding' faults, but unfortunately because the exhibits concerned were not, in my opinion, representative of the breed, and failed to conform sufficiently to the overall requirements of the Breed Standard both in respect of type and coat.

Asian Self Adult Male.

2 Alger Street's TYPHA MASTERCLASS 72c 24 - 05 - 98 Overall lacking correct Asian type. Head untypical of the breed and far too British in type. Ears too small. Nose too long. Coat rather long and very open. Colour very uneven and not the colour I would expect in a Lilac.

Asian Tabby Adult Male

2 Ladkin's RIVERDANCE ANAK LAKILAKI 72 38sq 20 - 09 - 99 Overall lacking correct Asian type. Head of poor type. Coat length and texture totally incorrect for the Breed. Pattern rather more Shaded than Tabby.

Asian Tabby Adult Female.

2 James's KARESAMA RIVERDANCE 72 38b 04 - 07 - 96 Overall lacking correct Asian type. Head of fair type. Incorrect coat length and texture for the Breed. Very poor pattern, and in my opinion did not appear to be Spotted.

Oriental Grand Champion Male

GCC Wildings' CH AMENRA BEAU BRUIN. 29. 15 - 04 - 99 This magnificent exhibit embodies all the qualities I look for in the Havana, and indeed the Oriental. Excellent head type with very good lines to wedge. Ears of perfect size shape and setting. Excellent top of head. Excellent profile. Green eyes of very good shape and set with the most wonderful arrogant expression which is the hallmark of the very best Havanas. Elegant neck. Strong masculine well muscled body of excellent Oriental type. Tail a fraction short for perfection. Excellent close lying coat of wonderful warm rich colour, though not quite sound to the roots. Excellent condition and temperament. Certainly my type of cat! I really enjoyed handling this superb chap. I had never seen this cat before and congratulate his owner Mrs Pam Wilding and breeder Mrs Carol Ward. I was flattered that he was entered under me!

Res GCC Carter's CH SUMMERDOWN MICHA FIRECRAKR. 38d. 14 - 09 - 99 Another chap I've not seen before. A most attractive exhibit who was very unlucky to meet the winner. Excellent head shape. Ears of excellent shape and set. Very good profile with excellent firm chin. Excellent lines to wedge. Green eyes of excellent shape and set. Excellent body type. Excellent coat length and texture. Very good rich red colour, even to the chin! Pattern rather elongated but sound to the roots and relatively free from agouti invasion. Leg markings could be a little more defined. I was disappointed I couldn't award him a Grand - on the day he well deserved it.

Bauerfiend's GR CH SHIMELEETA OLDBLUEEYES. 35. 08 - 05 - 98 Head and body overall of very good type. Unfortunately this grumpy chap lacked sparkle. Body rather small and effeminate. Coat open and greasy, staining to feet and legs, body coat not clear white.

Wilding's CH AMENRA ISTABRAQ. 43s. 25 - 01 - 99 Head off overall fair type. Good strong body type. Coat of good length and texture. Even heavy shading showing little residual pattern, unfortunately of low grade silver with a totally unacceptable degree of pigmentation in the silver.

Oriental Grand Champion Female

GCC Turner's CH MIDAMYST DANCINGSPANGLES. 37e. 31 - 07 - 99 Head of overall excellent type. Large ears of very good shape and set. Excellent top of head. Excellent profile. Excellent lines to wedge with just a slight muzzle pinch. Green eyes of excellent shape and set. Coat of very good length and texture, excellent rich colour and sound to roots. To be critical showing rather heavy barring. A beautiful exhibit well deserving of this high award.

2 Bauerfiend's GR CH SHIMILEETA MADEINHEAVEN. 35. 20 - 01 - 96 I did not award a Reserve to this lovely old lady because in my opinion she is no longer of Grand standard. Ears of good size and shape, held a little upright. Excellent profile. Good eye shape and set. Coat of good length and texture. Body rather mature and lacking elegance. A dear old lady who has unfortunately passed her "Best Before Date".

Foreign White Adult Male

1 CC n/a Bauerfiend's GR CH SHIMELEETA OLDBLUEEYES. 35. 08 - 05 - 98

Foreign White Adult Female

1 CC & BoB Bauerfiend's GR CH SHIMILEETA MADEINHEAVEN. 35. 20 - 01 - 96 Whilst I did not award a Res Gd to this exhibit I did feel, taking into account her age, justified in awarding her a CC.

Oriental Cinnamon Adult Male

1 CC & BoB Short's SINSIANNA CIMEROESLAD. 37k. 23 - 03 - 00 Head of excellent type. Ears large and very well set. Excellent straight lines to wedge. Very good profile though top of head just a little flat. Eyes rather narrow with raised haws for which reason I called the Duty Vet. Excellent strong well muscled body of correct Oriental type. Excellent legs and paws. Tail a little short for balance. Short close lying coat of excellent texture. Coat of excellent colour, showing minimal ghosting and almost sound to the root. A superb chap though I was concerned over his eyes. I went back to him about an hour later and as there was some improvement I warded the CC.

Oriental Black Male Neuter

1 PC & BoB Duffy's PR FERNGULLY DARKEST AFRIKA. 37. 08 - 05 - 99 Ears of very good size and shape held just a little high. Profile just a little uneven. Acceptable green eyes of very good shape and set. Body of excellent length and correct Oriental type. Well balanced limbs, tail a little short for perfection. Excellent short close lying coat of perfect texture. Dense black and totally sound to the roots. Well deserving of PC.

Oriental Shaded Male Neuter

1 PC & BoB Lillington's SALASIM DUNE. 43ds. 15 - 05 - 00 I was really impressed by this most attractive young chap. A superbly balanced head in total accord with the Breed Standard. Ears of excellent size and shape, perfectly set. Excellent top of head. Excellent profile overall despite a slight dip to the nose. Excellent lines to wedge, superb strength to chin. Eyes of the most wonderful shape and set, and perfect size. Excellent green eye colour. Excellent body length with perfectly balanced legs and tail. Body just a little plump! Excellent short coat of excellent texture. Shading developing well, some ghosting still clearly visible. Very good red colour on the clearest brightest silver ground I think I have ever seen. I hope I shall have the opportunity of seeing this chap when he's older. A most attractive chap with a wonderful temperament certainly well deserving of the PC …… I have to say though I did prefer his sister!!

2 Clements' PR MOJIQUE MERCURY. 43s. 19 - 01 - 00 Overall this exhibit lacked balanced, the head being too small in proportion to body. Ears of good size and shape, held rather forward. Eyes of fair colour, correctly set. Good profile. Top of head rather flat. Body of heavy type, carrying too much weight and lacking Oriental elegance. Tail requires more length and taper. Coat of excellent length and texture. Excellent even shading. Silver ground rather dull and lacking the sparkle I look for in a black silver. Some tarnishing to face and legs.

Angora Male Neuter

1 IC & BoB Lanston's LORICHA MIDNITE COWBOY. 62 18. 07 - 02 - 99 A large exhibit. Head of overall good type. Ears of very good size and set. Good profile. Wedge just a little short. Eyes of good colour, pleasing shape and set. Coat of very good length but just a little woolly in texture. I hesitated over the IC but on balance felt it to be warranted. Lovely tempered exhibit.
